INTRODUCTION

The UNIVERS Party was founded in 2009 in the ONAREF neighborhood of Ngaoundéré, in the Vina Division, Adamaoua Region. The initiative came from Mr. Nkou Mvondo Prosper, with the goal of rallying the population into a political force that would serve as an alternative to the RDPC (CPDM) and the UNDP, the two dominant parties in the Adamaoua Region.

However, Nkou Mvondo’s name does not appear on the party’s founding documents. At the time, he was still a member of the RDPC and served as First Deputy Mayor of the city of Ngaoundéré. It was agreed that Nkou Mvondo would officially join the UNIVERS Party only at the end of his municipal term, which was set to run until 2012.

Mr. Atangana Dieudonné was entrusted with handling the administrative process of submitting the party's creation file to the Governor’s office of the Adamaoua Region, for transmission to the Ministry of Territorial Administration. At the party’s founding general assembly, Atangana Dieudonné was appointed President of the UNIVERS Party, although in practice, it was Nkou Mvondo who was steering the party’s development behind the scenes.

After completing his term as Municipal Councilor and Deputy Mayor, Nkou Mvondo officially joined the UNIVERS Party in 2013, following his resignation from the RDPC.

In 2013, the UNIVERS Party took part in Cameroon’s municipal and legislative elections. The party secured two municipal councilor seats. This electoral result gave UNIVERS the legal status required to participate in Cameroon’s presidential election.

In February 2016, a major party congress was held in Ngaoundéré. During the congress, Nkou Mvondo was appointed as party leader. Shortly after, the UNIVERS Party formed an alliance with the MRC (led by Maurice Kamto), the CPP (led by Kah Walla), the "faithful" faction of the UPC, and several civil society organizations. This coalition aimed to coordinate political action and enhance opposition efforts against the ruling regime.

In March 2016, a joint demonstration organized by these groups was violently repressed by police and gendarmes at the MRC headquarters in the Odza neighborhood of Yaoundé. Nkou Mvondo and several other political leaders (Alain Fogue, Sosthème Madard Lipot, Roger Noah...) were arrested and detained by Cameroon’s political police.

In July 2016, the UNIVERS Party received an invitation to attend the Democratic National Convention of the U.S. Democratic Party held in Philadelphia.

In 2018, Cabral Libii, a young and charismatic figure, was the UNIVERS Party's candidate in the presidential election. He earned a respectable third place, behind Paul Biya (RDPC) and Maurice Kamto (MRC).

In 2020, the UNIVERS Party again participated in the municipal and legislative elections, once again securing two municipal councilor seats in the city of Ngaoundéré. Based on this electoral performance, UNIVERS was ranked the 14th political party in Cameroon out of nearly 400 registered parties, according to the Ministry of Territorial Administration. It is one of only 18 political parties legally qualified to run a candidate in the 2025 presidential election.

In 2025, the UNIVERS Party will be present in the presidential race, with Barrister AKERE MUNA as its candidate.
